Writing Style

by Heather Goldsmith on March 7th, 2007

I’ve mentioned handwriting analysis before; but still on the subject of rereading your journals, a quick glance at your handwriting style reveals a lot about your frame of mind at the time of writing.

For myself I notice the large looping letters when I’m feeling relaxed and well. My writing takes on a sharp edge when I’m under stress and edgy. I’ve noticed when I don’t form words correctly it usually means I was super excited or really upset. Reading the contents of the entry usually provides more details.

It’s one thing you cannot show in an online journal or blog, though. Perhaps that’s something someone could develop; word processing software that reflects your mood. Of course, for all I know this already exists.

7 opinions for Writing Style

Here’s a question: I used to be wonderful and faithful at keeping my journal. Then I got into blogging and now it feels as if I’m all “written out” when it comes time to write in my personal journal. My blog can’t substitute for my journal, it’s a different writing style and has a different purpose. Anyone else out there having similar troubles?

Great question, Michelle. I’ll point this out tonight in the blog to make sure you get more response. ;-)

As far as handwriting, I think my handwriting is sloppier when I’m agitated - I’m just more concerned about getting the words down and venting my feelings.

Sometimes, though, there will be an entry with really neat handwriting. These entries are usually more researched-based, and I’m writing my observations, not feelings.

You’re right about the journals vs. blogs - you can’t see any of that in a blog post. Pity.

    Hi Dawn,
Thanks for commenting. I think it’s interesting to look at writing style. I know blogs have those little emoticon mood thingos, but it’s just not the same. Thanks again. ;-)

I am currently in a class in college looking up in formation on journal writing. we will be expected to write journals daily. and turn them in. graded only by being done, not on content.
the purpose is to hone our people”soft” skills.
    can you help?
