A Creative Journal

Writing Letters as Journal Entries

by Heather Goldsmith on May 9th, 2006

Science and Technology News interviewed Dava Sobel recently. Dava is the author of several fascinating non-fiction books; Longitude : The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of his Time, The Planets and Galileo’s Daughter.

When asked the question “What advice would you give to new writers in the field?” Dava recommends writing letters rather than a journal written specifically to the self. There’s good reason to follow this advice if you tend towards lazy writing. As a way around this you could address your journal to your future self, or to a child who will one day grow to be an adult, to a long dead parent or sibling, etc.

If you do write letters to improve your communication skills, be certain to keep copies for yourself in a file or journal.
