A Creative Journal

When There’s Nothing to Write

by Heather Goldsmith on June 8th, 2006

After yesterday’s entry I felt I needed to add a little something. Although the ideal might be to write in your journal every day, there are times when this simply cannot happen. Either your life is too busy, or you just can’t bring yourself to write.

Perhaps what’s happening now is too traumatic, or leaves no room for reflection. Try as you might the act of journal writing isn’t going to happen. Don’t feel bad or make this a reason to feel you are a journal writing failure. The gaps in dates leave you room to go back at a later time, when you can reflect, and write about those days.

If you’re really busy you might consider taking a journal writing break away for an hour or so just once a week. This can be therapeutic and help you to go deeper into your situation than you might with lighter daily entries. While my daughter studied her final year of high school she found keeping a quick notation of events in a small notebook a handy way to keep up to date. Later, on holidays and other breaks, she would go through and write up the entire incidents to her satisfaction.

Journal writing needs to be a tool you can use. Work on making it work for you.

Yep, I do this! Writing a quick list of the day’s highlights, I can usually fit a week onto one page… Nice to be able to recap an entire week in a single glance.

Lol, thanks for the input. I love hearing the different ways people use journal writing to suit them. ;-)
