What to Write About..?

by Heather Goldsmith on May 13th, 2006

There are days when even for me words don’t come easy. I can sit down to write in my journal with my list of prompts, words and other bits and pieces and just feel uninspired by them all. The blank page looks too pristine; the pen feels awkward in my hands.

This is where I’ve discovered to simply write something anyway. When feeling this way I often start with a description of where I am sitting at that moment. I employ all five senses by noting the scents around me; the specific sounds, both near and far; what I can see; if I’m feeling warm, cool, or just right; and what I’m eating or drinking. I’ll often write who I’m with or not with, too, as I often sit down with my toddler in a coffee shop and write a page or two, if he’ll let me.

Locating myself by description gives time for my thoughts to settle and for me to decide what is important enough to pen in my journal. It gives me room to let my thoughts flow and not to force them where I think they should go. Often it’s the less obvious worries and concerns that surface at these moments.

So, don’t let these feelings take over. Just sit down and begin to write. It’s the best way to get something down on the page. Before you know it you’ll be spilling your deepest thoughts and writing faster just to keep up.
