What Kind of Journal?

In the entry No Rules I encouraged you to use whatever tools you had on hand to begin writing in your journal. You might want to choose a special kind of notebook or journal in which to write your thoughts. When I first began keeping a journal I used what I had there and then. I didn’t feel my writing, or ramblings, justified me spending a lot of money, so once I’d filled that journal I purchased simple spiral-bound notebooks and scribbled into those pages, filling them swiftly.

How things have changed. Now I know the value of keeping a journal I gladly pay for the kind of book I feel most comfortable writing in. For me that is a large handmade notebook from Affirmations. They do sell online, but I purchase mine from a book store in the city. The pages are creamy, thick and unlined. I like the freedom this gives me. I can write bigger, smaller, on an angle or across the length of the page instead of the width. I can even write around in circles if the mood strikes me. The pages will also hold up anything I might want to glue in, drawings I make or even simple watercolour paintings.

Though, in the spirit of being flexible, I have needed to change my choice of journal just lately. Carrying around such a large journal in an already overloaded nappy bag was no longer suiting me. I switched to some lovely unlined smaller journals from Intrinsic, which are lighter and can be seen in this photo. One of these journals takes up far less room than my real favourite.

I encourage you to experiment with different kinds of journals until you find the one you feel most at ease with. If you can’t seem to find something to satisfy this might mean you’ll have to make your own journals, but I’ll post more on that subject in the next few weeks.
