What is Happiness?

by Heather Goldsmith on June 12th, 2006

There’s an interesting article from The Observer on What Makes Women Happy? which I read over the weekend. Although the article is lengthy, and contains some small typos, it’s well worth the read to discover what the experts say makes women happy.

Geraldine Bedell gives readers plenty to think about. You may like to ponder her questions in your journal as prompts for today. Just what is happiness? What makes you happy? How much has the idea of happiness changed over the last 100 years?

There are some reader responses at the end of the article. These are not only from women, so please feel free to use this prompt no matter what your sex. Please feel free to comment in the section below.

The question of happiness is clearly an interesting one for writers. I think that sometimes people confuse having fun with true happiness. To me, happiness is a very deep and peaceful emotion that goes beyond a particular experience. We only have to look at some seemingly very happy people in the world who actually have very little materially and who often have deep hardships in their lives to realize that happiness is internally, not externally, based.

    Hi Panasianbiz,
I have to apologise for not responding to this comment sooner. I have no idea why I didn’t notice it. Yes, I do agree. A lot of people think happiness is something a bit fluffier than a deep abiding sense of peace & tranquility. Thank you so much for making a comment. I hope it doesn’t happen again. ;-)
