Using Your Journal for Prompts

by Heather Goldsmith on July 3rd, 2007

A comment left on yesterday’s entry got me thinking. Finding prompts to help you write in your journal is great. I’ve supplied heaps here, or linked to places that have great prompts, if you need them. But, using your own journal is probably a better place to draw journal writing prompts from. Not only will they be more relevant to you, the resource is right there any time you need journal writing inspiration.

Pick up on pieces written that didn’t really go anywhere. You probably have heaps of these in your journal already. Try to carry one of those highlighter pens with you. When you feel lacking in inspiration pull out the highlighter pen and read looking for specific places you’ve dropped a topic too early or simply ran out of steam with it. Mark these pieces and revisit them in a fresh entry.

You can also follow up on events mentioned in your journal. I’ve noticed I’m often guilty of writing about the lead up to something, and then hardly writing anything about it once the thing happened. Look for these kinds of entries, too, when you don’t really know what to write.

These are just two ideas. I’m sure rereading your journals will give you plenty more.

I love the idea of using your journal for writing prompts. You’re right; there are tons of seeds buried in there that we didn’t harvest the first time around. I’m looking forward to going back through my journal and finding those seeds. :-)
