A Creative Journal

Too Much Information?

by Heather Goldsmith on November 5th, 2005

In this news story a man is arrested while writing in his diary. What for you might ask? He admitted, in his diary, to stealing the mobile phone and MP3 player a fellow train passenger reported stolen moments earlier. In fact this journal writer wrote about his stealing activities over the last two years in his journal.

Okay, this story was in China, but is there such a thing as too much information when it comes to what you write in your journal? What should you leave out? Would you write of similar and/or illegal activity? Would your journal testify against you? And should such an invasion of your privacy be permitted, anyway? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

What a crazy story! Although I think with some of the obsessive-compulsive thieves, journaling and reviewing the journal must be part of the need to steal.

Personally, I don’t write down grievances with other people. I don’t need to be reminded of it in any place other than my memory (which is bad enough) and they don’t need to come across it either.

Thanks for your comment, Lei. I couldn’t resist making an entry about this story. It was just so… silly! ;-)

if i were to commit a serious crime, i wouldn’t write about it, not even in my own journal. :))

I don’t think I would, either. It seems a bit obvious, but some people just don’t get it, I suppose. Thanks for your input. ;-)

I don’t necessarily leave things out of my journal, but I do use somewhat of a code when writing that only I could understand. That way I can recall things without invading the privacy of myself or others. Then again, I don’t go around doing illegal stuff! ha ha

I agree. I feel we should be able to write whatever we need to, but it might be wise to use code or some other way so anyone reading won’t guess the obvious. See more of my entries on this topic if you like.

I sure hope none of my readers would be up to anything illegal, but it’s an interesting thought. Thanks for responding. ;-)
