Things You Never Told Your Mother

A while ago I wrote a journal writing prompt entry about the things your mother never told you. Today spend some time writing in your journal all the things you never told your mother. Perhaps you might like to use the unsent letter technique for this journal writing exercise. You could begin, leave room to return to the entry, and continue after allowing yourself time to ponder and remember moments you have never mentioned to your mother. Keep it to a list of ten, if there are loads of things you have never told her.
Perhaps you have the enviable relationship where you have always told your mother everything. Is this really true? Are there some things you have left unspoken between the two of you? Why have you kept these things from your mother? Are you afraid of hurting her feelings or does it go deeper?
I hope you enjoy this journal writing challenge. Please leave any comments in the section below.

I think there is a book of this (or very similiar) title by Blake Morrison something like “Things my mother never told me” very good book, relevant to “us” on here in a way and what we were talking about re finding peoples’ journals/papers after they have passed away. I won’t spoil it for you, if you want to know what Blake found out I recommend the book( hope thats not out of order I’m not trying to plug it more share it) or I expect there’s a bookshop website somewhere that has reviewed it. He also wrote a book about his father which was made into a film staring Jim Broadbent. My Mum is getting a bit Altzheimer’s-ish, its helping me to write about it in my journal. I’m not sure where you are based ? Do any of you read the Guardian on Saturdays ? two things relevant: A lady wrote an anonymous column every week about her three wayward teenagers not using their real names their adventures/activities were printed every Sat’ for several years (Living With Teenagers) their friends worked out that it was them and eventually told one of them known in the articles as Jack. She then had to stop. The articles were made into a book “3 kids, 2 adults and a bumpy ride” something like that. Also there’s a lady Ros Coward who writes a very thought provoking sort of journal entry “Looking after Mother” about her mother with dementia. Its helped me. Anyway if you are interested you can go to http://www.guardian.co.uk which should work or try The Guardian Newspaper or The Guardian on line edition and type Family into the search bit.Hope thats ok anyway. Its night here anyway 11.45 pm

Hi Christina,
Thanks so much for your input. The book sounds very interesting, and yes those articles, too. I am based in Perth, Western Australia, but I can most likely access the website to read the articles/columns. Thanks for providing the link and for contributing your thoughts. ;-)
