The Surviving Christmas Plan

by Heather Goldsmith on December 20th, 2007

Christmas day, or simply the holidays around Christmas time, can actually be quite an ordeal for some people. While we love to imagine the day filled with joyous family moments, for some of us it’s more likely to be filled with tormenting family moments. Most often we use journals to write about events after they’ve happened. Instead of writing, with woe, about the things you half expected to happen, spend some time writing about the events you’re dreading over the next week or so. Write about the comments that relative just has to make about your failed business/marriage or the weight you’ve put on/lost. I think you get the idea.

The purpose of writing about these events before you go is to prepare yourself. Once you remember all the rotten things that happen every Christmas, and how these make you feel, you can develop a strategy for coping. Write how you will respond instead of how you did respond. While this is plan, and not everything in life goes according to plan, you will at least be on the alert for those same tired old comments and put downs. The responses you write about may not actually happen, but having time to think about it will see you better equipped to cope.

For most of us these family gatherings are good times. If that is you I hope you are not offended by this blog entry. Not everyone has such good times each year. I’m looking for ways to help everyone, especially at Christmas. I hope you find a use for this journal writing prompt.
