A Creative Journal

Take a Moment

by Heather Goldsmith on December 21st, 2005

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but if you go anywhere near the major shopping centres lately things are pretty hectic. All this mad hustle and bustle can only mean one thing at this time of year.

You’re right; Christmas shopping and that last-minute dash to find the perfect gift for someone you love, or maybe just like a little. There are lots to achieve right now. Not only are we shopping for gifts, but for the special meals and other events we’ll attend or hold over the next several days. There are functions and break-up parties before the holidays start. And probably heaps of things I haven’t even mentioned.

That’s why it’s really important to take a moment and simply write in your journal. If you’re really pressed for time keep the journal writing session to five minutes. Note the essentials, but try to focus on how you’re feeling. The simple act of unburdening in your journal will help you cope with the silly season far better.

Try for fifteen minutes and detail the mad rush of thoughts going through your mind. You might feel you can’t cope, but writing about it really does help. As you write you’ll find solutions to some of the problems simmering away in your mind. The very act of taking fifteen minutes for yourself will actually save you time.

You might like to try writing in your journal first thing in the morning, which will help you order and prioritise your day. But don’t feel bad if all you manage are a few lines before you fall into bed for the night.

I took some time today in the crazy rush of people to sit and jot down my thoughts. I’m so glad I did. I hope you can do the same, too, and not let the stress of preparing for the holiday season get the best of you.
