Self Censorship

by Heather Goldsmith on March 13th, 2007

Continuing the thoughts from yesterday’s entry; self censorship is something you need not do in your personal handwritten journal.

A good definition of self censorship is when you give into doubts about what you have to say. This blog entry describes what it is to censor yourself, especially in writing for a public forum. Here’s a definition from Wikipedia.com.

When writing for an audience it may be necessary to hold back some of your thoughts and ideas at times. Your journal is not the place for this. There should be no reason to put a stop on your thoughts in a private journal. But, for some, the thought of someone finding their journal and reading will prevent them revealing their deepest and most intimate thoughts.

There are ways around this, if you find this your reason for self censorship. Read Privacy & Your Journal, Codes for Better Journal Privacy, and More on Journal Privacy for ideas.

More often than not the reason for prohibiting certain thoughts, words and ideas is simply conditioning. Women in particular easily suppress their thoughts. I’ll be the first to admit it. Nice people don’t say/write things like that, we think, and prevent ourselves expressing a valid opinion or viewpoint. And even if that thought is controversial or blatant rubbish, it matters little if the only place it is expressed is in your personal journal.

I encourage you to go with first thoughts in your journal. Let loose and stop worrying about what you should do, say, be or feel. Write your honest thoughts, even if they are changing day by day.
