A Creative Journal

Room to Vocalise First Thoughts

by Heather Goldsmith on March 15th, 2007

Still continuing from the entry All Written Out, Freedom of Expression and Self Censorship.

A journal is a great place to let loose those first thoughts. Okay, they might not always pan out to be anything of value. But it’s great to have room to dive in without checking to see if the water is fine. Too much in life is about holding back, keeping quiet, and not offending. So, make the most of it and write it all down.

Having a conversation with yourself is what you are doing by writing in a journal. Once you’ve written it there you may return to the topic again and again, if you wish. Or you can write it and forget about it. That’s one reason I feel rereading journals is such an important exercise. All those great ideas come back to you as if fresh and exciting again.

2 opinions for Room to Vocalise First Thoughts

Oh, what an excellent, timely reminder! Every so often I give in to the mysterious voice in my head that says, “Your journal should be full of well-phrased, articulate thoughts,” and that leads to smaller and smaller entries, as I edit myself down to nothing. I went through one of those cycles a few weeks ago, and am finally pulling out to the “write anything and everything — get the words out first, then you can edit them” state that I think my journal is ideally suited for.

    Hi Velma,
Glad to help out. Yes, I feel we need to run with these type of entries to benefit most from journal writing. Thanks for commenting. ;-)
