Privacy for Teenage Journal Writers?
After writing yesterday’s blog entry I had to think more about journal writing and privacy. The issue of teen privacy when it comes to journals and diaries came up with my own teens today in conversation. I have always told my two teens I will never read their journal and have kept to that promise. I did take a quick flick at my fifteen year old son’s when he ran away from home several times late last year and earlier this year. It took me a while to finally do so, though, and I was reluctant. Not to my surprise I found nothing there of great concern, anyway. I also let him know when he returned home and he was fine with me viewing his sketches and entries because he trusts me not to overreact.
Some parents hold the view that they have a right to read their teens private journals. I don’t agree. Here’s some more interesting input from various people on the topic for you to read. I’d love to know what you think on this topic, too.
