Making Connections
One of the reasons I enjoy using prompts in my journal is the way my mind works to make connections. I am constantly surprised by what I connect together. I can start out writing about clocks and end up writing my thoughts on teen pregnancy. Or begin writing about walking up a path and find myself writing about my cousin who was murdered.
A great exercise in creativity is to take seemingly unrelated items, words and/or events and force your brain to create some kind of connection between them. Your mind is an amazing storehouse of vital information and trivial details. Setting such a task sets your mind to bring something significant to the page. Try these ones for your own journal writing.
1. a ruler, coffee, Valentine’s Day
2. the national newspaper, mints, St. Patrick’s Day
3. a pocket full of coins, motorcycles, your next public holiday
4. pink ties, batteries, Easter Sunday
5. train, fresh, Mother’s Day
One way to make this even more random is to collect words, any will do. Print or write them onto small pieces of paper, put them into a small bag or envelope, and randomly select three. Set a timer and write in your journal for ten minutes. Don’t stop. Just see what your creative mind discovers and connects.
