Lyrics as Journal Writing Prompts
I find song lyrics inspirational. A favourite song will come on the radio and I’m lost just singing along to it. Other songs inspire me because I really love the music but don’t think much of the lyrics. Often I find myself making up my own and singing them instead. I’m sure I’m not the only person who does this. At least I hope I’m not.
As a suggested journal writing prompt find the lyrics to a song you don’t like the words to, but do like the music. Now, write your own song. The form and rhythm are already there, so just fit in the words you would like to sing instead. You may want to do this physically, with the music playing, or try with a copy of the lyrics and memory. Once you’ve written your own song, play the tune and see how well it works.

Sting and Paul Simon are some of my favorite song writers, they have fabulous lyrics.

Yeah, lyrics can be inspiring on their own as journal prompts, too. ;-)
