Lost in My Journal

by Heather Goldsmith on September 21st, 2006

Don’t you just love it when you have a journal writing session where you lose yourself in time? I had such a session earlier this evening. My daughter often wants to do a little shopping for herself on a Thursday night, and as she doesn’t drive yet, I take her up the road. There is a price, though. I ask for a cup of coffee to sit and sup while she shops. It’s a nice break from things at home, too. I’ve just put the baby down for the evening and hubby is only too happy to stay there to mind him. She leaves me there for a good hour and I can relax and write in my journal.

Tonight I hardly noticed the other shoppers as they buzzed around me as I sat in the cafĂ©. My surprise at my daughter’s arrival made her smile. I really enjoyed the session. The time disappeared as I sat and scrawled in my journal. I was able to write freely and went deeply into a topic that’s been on my mind.

Does this happen to you when you write in your journal? What conditions might improve the chances of having a similar experience? Please share in the comments section below.

    Hi, Heather,

Yes, I do lose myself in my journal, often. T tend not to write unless I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to, in fact. I think that the most important thing I need in order to be able to lose track of everything is a decent span of time, say at least 45 minutes or an hour, plus not feeling rushed. I find that time passes and I don’t notice it at all when I’m writing a poem, especially…I tend to write poems about things I feel passionately about and only when a have some time.

It’s a wonderful experience when it occurs; I agree with you.

Thanks for your comment Olivia. I’m pleased to read you enjoy writing poetry in your journal. That’s a topic I’d like to mention on this blog. Any good links to suggest? Thanks again. ;-)

I really don’t know of any. I just write what comes to me. I’m not sure it’s even very good poetry. I just feel so passionate about what I’m writing that I get into a rhythm and get all of my feelings out. No good links, though…

    Hi Olivia,
No worries. I was just hoping you may have some. I think journal poetry is quite instinctive, from what I’ve discovered from others. Thanks again for your input, I really appreciate it. ;-)

I just stumbled upon this site and love it. I do just about everything in my journalling. Venting, thinking, planning, dreaming, poetry, song lyrics… now you’ve got me interested in mandalas!
