Lacking Inspiration?

by Heather Goldsmith on October 14th, 2006

With so many and varied tools at our fingertips it can be hard to imagine any of us lack inspiration from time to time. Despite the internet, libraries and any other resource you can name, the fact is, there are moments when inspiration alludes.

I don’t believe this should make you feel worse. In fact, I believe these low moods and lack of motivation is just something we should accept as part of life. As creative beings there is an ebb and flow to life. There are cycles and seasons.

Feeling flat and uninspired could simply be a signal to take it easy. None of us can continue to produce work, art, writing, whatever, constantly. Not only should there be output, but input.

When you sit to write in your journal and feel less than thrilled at the prospect, perhaps you shouldn’t write anything. Perhaps make an entry that sums up your mood. Put down your pen and go walk on the beach, or slowly walk through an art gallery, sit somewhere and gaze at the passing parade of people.

The list of possibilities is endless. Find something that fills up your creative well. Return to the blank page later or tomorrow. It will still be there. Remember to treat yourself well.
