A Creative Journal

Freaky Friday #42

by Heather Goldsmith on January 19th, 2007

It’s Friday again, already, and that means it’s Freaky Friday. If you need to know more about this journal writing challenge, please read the First Freaky Friday entry.

Today think about the music you listen to. What inspires you to write, create, and express yourself? Choose something completely new to you. Perhaps do a little research online or just grab something without thinking too hard about it from your local library, from a friend, or perhaps something your kids listen to.

Play this music and begin to write in your journal. What emotions surge through your being? What does this music evoke in you? Even if you feel extremely irritated, write on through. Set a timer if you need to, or simply try to write until the end of five pieces on the CD, or whatever you’ve chosen to listen to.

This journal exercise is about changing your perspective. You may also find this a useful exercise when writing about characters for novels, etc. Listen to the music your characters enjoy while you write. It could make all the difference in helping you shift your focus to discover the core of that character’s motivation, etc.

I hope you enjoy this journal writing prompt.
