Creative Clichés
One of the worst things I used to notice when rereading my journals was the amount of clichés I used. To prevent these boring clichés occurring too often I began to go on the offensive while writing in my journal. If a cliché was my first thought I would try hard to write something different. I’d explore new angles on the same meaning or turn the expression on its head. Now when I reread my journal I rarely find a cliché. I’ve worked on my writing to keep it fresh and interesting to read. Now when I find a cliché on the tip of my pen I hesitate a moment and let the creative part of my brain take over.
How do you deal with clichés in your journal writing? Please share any comments in the section below.

Thanks for the post, I enjoyed it. I find myself writing cliches often–I’m going to try hestitating and letting my creative side take over, like you said.

I find that when I am going through a life-stage transition, that I understand cliches for the first time. A thousand love songs had personal meaning for the first time when I first fell in love, for example. So, I try to dig a little deeper, understand the impulse, analyse why it suddenly makes sense.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for your comment. It’s interesting how even clichés can become journal writing prompts in themselves. Sounds like you’ve got something cool to investigate in your journal right now. Thanks for the welcome to the Lifestyles channel. ;-)
