A Creative Journal

Be a Better Writer

by Heather Goldsmith on February 27th, 2007

I enjoyed this news story on one of the ways to encourage better writing; that is simply to read. The article also mentions parents modelling writing as a good form of communication and the use of a journal.

The article quotes Steve Peha and Margot Carmichael Lester, a husband and wife team, who created the series for children on improving writing ability; Be a Better Writer: Power Tools for Young Writers!: Essential Tips, Exercises and Techniques for Aspiring Writers.

I’m assuming the writers encourage your kids to keep a journal. I know my example encouraged both of my grown-up children to keep a journal themselves. My daughter is an avid night time writer. My son is more a visual person and keeps a visual journal.

Even the little guy gets in on the act. When I sit to write in a café and he’s with me, he always shows me his writings. Ok, they don’t look like much more than loops and swirls, but I know he’s copying his mum. I hope this book does something to encourage your kids to keep a journal, too.
