A Practical Use for Your Journal
Although I believe keeping a journal is in itself a practical exercise there are times when it just helps with those little things in life. When girls first begin to menstruate they are encouraged to note the date and length of each period. A personal journal or diary is an excellent place for this.
For myself, I mark the date my period commences with a red asterick in the corner of that page. The date I ovulate also gets marked with a red circle. A quick glance at my journal pages helps me figure out when I should be due for the next one. This is very useful for me, because I can understand better why I might be feeling a bit more moody than usual.
Of course, when you are trying to fall pregnant all this comes in very handy. You might like to use symbols, as I have done, but you can get much more detailed. It is after all your journal. Tracking what happens when you finally achieve conception is also naturally noted down in your journal.
And for when those changes begin as your body winds down into menopause your journal is the perfect place to note those changes, too.

Great tip, Heather.
When I used to have my periods, and for years afterwards (since I still have my ovaries although I’ve had a hysterectomy) I used to write “Day 23″ or whatever day of my cycle it was—for the same reason. But then I lost count, and there’s no good way to recover what day of my cycle it actually is. Anyway, I enjoyed noticing the changes, as well as observing the cycles of my body…and of life in general.
For 2007 I am going to begin tracking the phases of the moon as I write. Since I can’t figure out where I’m cycling personally, I think I’ll enjoy conceptualizing time within the framework of this reliable cycle.

Thanks for commenting Olivia. I’m interested in seeing how your tracking the phases of the moon goes. Let me know, here when you chose to write about it in your blog, so I can write up an entry about it here, too. ;-)
